The Solutions
With the greater array of economic resources at its disposal resulting from consistent economic growth into the 21st century, the Philippines has gained the ability to leverage such resources when addressing its most pressing climate challenges in 2054. Rising sea levels are increasingly recognized for the urgent threat they pose, particularly in archipelagic nations like the Philippines. This warming is contributing to sea levels in Manila rising at twice the global average rate—approximately 5.7 to 7.0 millimeters per year compared to the global average of 2.8 to 3.6 millimeters. Such rapid increases not only exacerbate the risk of flooding, but also imply heightened frequency and severity of flooding events during typhoons, which are already major disasters in the region. Additionally, the forecasted increase in tropical cyclone intensity and extended dry seasons on Luzon island compound these challenges, making rising sea levels a critical focal point for climate action efforts in the Philippines.
To find effective solutions, we can draw inspiration from initiatives that have already been implemented in Singapore, an environmentally comparable, but more developed economy. Notably, key differences in social circumstance and organization have a tendency to precipitate downwards to stifle proper execution of many large-scale programs in the Philippines. An analysis and recommendations for these issues will be addressed in the following section. Nonetheless, we will first look towards the basic scientific and otherwise technical frameworks Singapore utilizes as potential solutions for Manila’s rapidly rising water levels.
